Parallels Plesk Panel does not support special symbols in mail names
APPLIES TO:
• Parallels Plesk Panel 11.x for Linux
• Parallels Plesk Panel 10.x for Linux
• Parallels Plesk Panel 9.x for Linux/Unix
Symptoms
Various issues occur with mail names which contain special symbols.
Symptom 1 - cannot create:
I get the following error when trying to create a mailname containing a special character, e.g. apostrophe:
Invalid name
The same error is returned when trying to add the mailname via API.
Symptom 2 - messages looping:
If a message is coming from an address containing a special character, e.g. mail'name@domain.tld, it will loop and recipient will receive it over and over.
Symptom 3 - forwarding does not work:
When a message comes from an email address containing a special character, e.g. apostrophe, it is not being forwarded and gets lost in case there is no mailbox enabled.
Symptom 4 - domain administrator cannot use it:
An email address with a special character cannot be used by domain administrator account.
________________________________________
All the above takes place despite the fact that special characters are allowed in mail names according to RFC #3696:
Without quotes, local-parts may consist of any combination of alphabetic characters, digits, or any of the special characters
! # $ % & ' * + - / = ? ^ _ ` . { | } ~
Resolution
Our development team is working hard on implementing support for special characters in mail names. The issue will be fixed in a future update for which a new Knowledgebase article will be created. You may subscribe for new articles on Parallels Plesk Panel Product if you wish to receive notifications about their creation.
Also, since version 11 Parallels Plesk Panel (PP) does not allow creating new mail addresses with special symbols. Also PP mail server will throw errors if an email is trying to get delivered/received at such a mail address

Message with apostrophe symbol in From field cannot be delivered to recipient
APPLIES TO:
• Parallels Plesk Panel 11.x for Linux
• Parallels Plesk Panel 10.4 for Linux/Unix
Symptoms
When an e-mail is sent to a Parallels Plesk Panel server with an apostrophe in the “From” address (such as abc’def@example.com), an error is registered in the mail handler. When such mail is received, an error similar to the following may appear in the mail handler logs:
Unable to get sender handlers from the database
When this error occurs, e-mails can fail to be delivered to the recipient.
Cause
The cause of this is a functionality bug in Parallels Plesk Panel. There are no security concerns or possibilities of compromised data from this bug.
Resolution
Parallels is currently working on patches to resolve this issue. Once available, this Knowledge Base article will be updated with these patches.
