How to change Language in Debian 3.1

I use dpkg-reconfigure locales for changing command line notices' language from german to english. The $LANG enviromental variable is now en_US.UTF-8 but all of the messages are in german. Re-logined after changing the locale. How to change notices to English is my main question?
